Pariss I dry sand to 12000MM brings out the best in the timber.

Bassmansimon, after the CA sand to around 3200/3600 MM for a satin finish, have done that before and has come up a treat

    Darren,
Sanding to 12000# then applying a finish is not a good idea. Finishes actually need something to key to, otherwise they are just a "sleve" and become susceptible to damage from even minor knocks.

I found out the hard way using MinWax Wipe on Poly on a laminated lidded box entry into AWTEX a couple of years ago. It was sanded to 1800 or 2000 with a velcro backed paper I got wit some Astradot. When I used a jamb chuck with "low tack" masking tape as extra security, the tape pulled of a significant amount of the finish.

As this one is probably a 2nd without much chance of redemption just try the old painters trick of making a small cut or cuts in the finish and use some std masking tape to test if it will lift away from the timber.

I agree. I've found that mistakes that are hidden are just mistakes waiting to be discovered. If you fill the crack with coffee, or maybe crushed turquoise, then it looks like you intended it that way. I always try & accent a crack or a mistake in some way. It adds interest.

This is normally true; but CA is a glue, not a finish. Most finishes bond by absorbing into the surface to ahere. CA attaches by means of molecular bonding the ends of its chain structure onto chains in the surface material.
Sanding to MM12000 creates a visual reflection effect that pops the grain similar to applying oil to the wood, but without the colour shift. This effect is a Russ Fairfield finding:

I had the good fortune to attend a deceased estate auction in Mareeba. Unfortunately most of the gear was gone when I arrived but I managed to pick up a stack of pen gear including blanks of various exotic timbers from the rain forests. In all a treasure trove for a pen turner so when I get a faulty pen I slmply toss it into a containerand when I have the time I dismantle and reuse the parts that can be salvaged. Cheers for now Jd
