Some more Critters
The first set of critter pens were cut really well, but I used dyes in the resin and with the fine detail, you couldn’t see the colour:mad: . So tried again with pigments in the resin, the colours worked fine, but my scroll work was a bit rushed .
The attached are the ones I kept. The timbers are Ebony, Asage Orange, Tibouchina Noeleen and Rose Sheoak. The Polaris pens kits are from Carrols and my standard pens are the slimline with wide band from GPW with resin pigments from ModelIt
The frog looks a bit squashed , the gecko deformed , and I got the colour wrong on the cobra . The bats were not too bad, but I had a problem with tear out along the edges:mad: of the wings and had to use resin with saw dust.
The only ones that were Ok were the spiders and dragon, but still not good enough to sell at a reasonable price – I wanted to sell >$100 . I have sold both spiders to a friend at work for $70, and the larger bat for $40 already. The dragon pencil was for myself.
Lessons learnt
1 take your time cutting
2 small drills wander, so drill the eyes after rough turning the pen then fill with resin
3 use contrasting resins and timber
4 use black and bright coloured resins
I will try again for a better frog, gecko and cobra and I’d like to try a bumble bee. The spiders are the easiest to cut and sell well, so I will make some more.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

I'm glad YOU didn't participate in the July Pen Swap... a Zebra pen done like that would've wiped the board!

Thanks.
Skew - I have been watching the swap threads and thinking about joining in, just having trouble finding time at the moment. I think other members pens have been brilliant and look forward to the August results.
BrindOg - perhaps I can take some more photos for the next ones for a WIP.
