dabbler's first pens
Hi guys,
I thought I should show the world my first attempts.
Feel free to point out the warts.
I'm painfully aware of more than one. Okay then - lots.
The details:
Blanks and kits from GPW.
#1 Copper streamline in (red?) coolabah
Medium CA (unsure how many coats)
Finished to 12k with Micromesh and 1 micron Micro Gloss
This originally had a far better finish but over-zealous sanding had removed the CA near the clip. Plus I also had issues with blanks sticking to bushes - coating cracked and flaked off when I separated completed pen from bushes.
Tips from dai sensei helped with the next two pens but my impatience meant this re-finish is still garbage.
The sanding and flaky CA coating are still obvious.
It'll go in the cupboard until I'm ready to re-finish the re-finish
#2 Silver slimline in acrylic
Medium CA ('bout 10 coats)
Finished to 12k with Micromesh and 1 micron Micro Gloss
Chipped acrylic is hidden on other side.
Not too keen on the finished shape either (and I turned it!).
#3 Gold streamline in acrylic
No CA.
Finished to 12k with Micromesh and 1 micron Micro Gloss
Acrylic broke away on nib end nearest centre bush while turning.
Had to shorten by about 2mm. Should have taken more off.
Tiny flecks of sparkle in the brown (not visible here) really caught me off guard.
Looked oily under artificial light.
Thought I'd stuffed another finish until I got it in full sunlight.
#4 Final pic has them as a trio.
As I said - feel free to comment.
+ve and -ve all welcome.

Let me be the first to congradulate you on your first pens. I will go out on the limb here and say it is not your first time behind a lathe though??? Those are better than most people's first pens. You even chose acrylics to do. Not everyone does that. One more thing and this is a biggie with me because most people who start with slimlines feel they need to make a pregnant pen with these huge bulges. You chose not to and I applaud you for not doing it. It looks so much more professional to not have those huge bulges.
Again nice work. Thanks for showing and I am guessing a Welcome is in order to the pen turning world.

Very good job on your first pens. I am also a beginner and it is through trial and error that you get your feet wet. You have pointed out a few things that are not quite right and do next time you will know what to look for.
Do you do other turnings?

Very nice pens Dabbler and I agree with JT with regards to the big fat slimlines but as we all have said lately everyone has there own opinion.
Cheers Ian

dabbler.
Very nice pens. My first ones were nowhere near as good as that. Well done.
Do like the brown and gold (yellow) one.

Medium CA (unsure how many coats)
Finished to 12k with Micromesh and 1 micron Micro Gloss
But what is "1 micron Micro Gloss"?
A skew on edge(use like a knife) will cut the CA bushing loose of the blank, just don't get to aggressive or your skew can get into the bushing.

Thanks for the comments guys.
JT and Christos - yep been turning for a bit over four years now. Haven't done any the last 18mo though. Usually do bowls, small platters and my version of a mosquito coil holder which is an oversized pot pourri bowl.
JT and Dorno - seeing other work examples online firmed up my thoughts on slimline being slim too. Bulges are not for me. I do like some curve though.
Cookie48 - wot's a hawk ?.... you're talking to a Qlder here. Just because I live on the GC doesn't mean I've embraced your version of footy. I'll leave that to the interstate migrants. I can see and hear the Suns stadium at Carrara from my place though. The lights can be annoying and 3G coverage crappy on game days but the ocassional fireworks are nice and photogenic. (I do know the Hawks - really I do.)
SDB777 - Micro Gloss is part of the Micro Mesh family of products. They describe it as "A water based liquid polish with 1 micron silicon abrasive." or something like that. There's a micon version too and they sell a variety of bottle sizes. I bought it as part of the "craft kit" that's marketed here. But I'll probably shift to something cheaper once I start to do more pens.
Blanks glueing to bushes was annoying. There's a PSI video online that explicitly says "Don't worry. It won't happen.".
