    Default Another Dead Finish

Peter (Penpal) gave me a cross cut Dead Finish blank and as he handed it over said "your going to have to work for it", and he was right. I sharpened my gouge more times than I remember and had a couple of blowouts but was able to save them each time. Finish is Rustins.

On the photography front, after a few comments about the stitching in my previous background, I picked up some felt squares (white, fawn & maroon). I attached pics of each background to show how they looked. I find the white is hard for the camera to focus on and the maroon overpowers the pens (even on light coloured wood). Personnally I like the fawn as it neutralises the glare a little but has some substance behind the pen.

    Enjoy,

And, besides all the photography, it is a beautifully made pen, lovely finish, very appealing wood, infact I appeal for some! Amos

Very nice, that dead finish is some gorgeous wood. I'm still trying to decide what kit to put mine on.

I don't want anything too fancy as I'll probably be carrying it a lot and I'm not a fancy pen type of guy, but I don't want to waste such beautiful wood on a run of the mill kit either.

    Thanks team...

Stirlo, I have been taking test photo's on each of the colours and have been keeping the fawn one most times. Will probably stop using the others soon.

Matt, make sure you post some pics when you decide what kit to use

    I will.

Nothing wrong with the Baron however, and I did not mean to imply that, it's a sharp looking kit. I don't like it for personal use however, otherwise I would probably go with it. I really don't like capped kits period, carrying cigar pens for so long has spoiled me, I like to be able to pull it out, twist it, use it, untwist it, and put it back all with one hand and quickly. Which doesn't leave me much choice in kits. Which is why I'm still looking.

Can someone define 'dead finish' for me. When I google it, I'm getting multiple timbers. eg. Wild Cherry, acacia etc.

    Default Dead Finish

To really name the tree correctly you need a sample leaves and bark etc.

The common name is attributed to confirm things are really serious when this species dies out in the Desert Country, indeed it is stated freely that it is always amongst the last to die hence Dead Finish.

Another tree the Acacia Tetragonophyla is called dead finish, identification is easy when you look at the leaf it is four sided (Tetra)

As in all common names local useage and folklaw sometimes blend, however the Dead finish, the rare deep flame red I had a small amount was collected by a friend I see seldom in fact the last time was at the WWW Show in Sydney, he knows more and can identify more trees than anyone I know, he gathers and mills and builds with it for a living so the next time I speak with him I will get specifics of that red one from him.

His most recent trip was all the way to Broome in WA indeed he was burned almost black still at the Show when I spoke with him. He sometimes gets extraspecial stuff, will stay in touch.

    Regards Peter

wonderful looking stuff. Trying to get info on it is difficult though.
Seems there are a few species called dead finish and it has several
nicknames too. So . .trying to look it up is like trying to pick up
    mercury.

    Beautiful pen

Great looking pen. You did a nice job on that one.

BTW, regarding your photography, I reckon I like the fawn color best as well. The blue / grey felt you see in my recent pictures is that of my billiard table. It seems to work well.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
