This paper is not for use as a clear coat over the top of timber or brass cartridges it is designed to wrap around tubes and then have clear casting resin applied over it or it can be used over the top of a blank which is 0.5mm undersized and 20 coats of CA
ALL of the adhesive Lables mentioned here require a spray of clear coat to stop the ink bleeding through and many of them also needed a second coat once wrapped around a tube, I thought it worth mentioning as we have solved that problem , also whilst the original post did say "decal" it also said "was thinking about using" so I thought it's an alternative and a lot easier then the traditional choices,

I build lots of different things and on a lot of them I like to put my name and month/year build or at least finished in. I've been doing this with the decal paper, but like you say, I have to coat it before wetting the decal and after I apply it. How would the paper you mention work for an application like this? It would be applied to wood, flat surface, in a rarely touched area. Would it stay in place or would a person need to cover it with some finish to protect it?
