Case demand
So, what the general opinion on the demand for cases to go with pens?
I always put them in a velvet sleeve at a minimum, then if someone wants a fancy box, I charge a nominal amount extra. For special pens, I'm likely to put it into a fancier box FOC, but then a lot of people say 'keep the box' anyway, which makes sense if the pen is going to be used.
Why I ask is two-fold. One, to know what stock I should keep on hand, and two, if/when I ever get my CNC machine working, I was thinking of making some custom boxes of my own.
So what's people's opinion on the demand for them, and how fancy?

I provide a box with all my pens, I factor the cost into the prices I charge.
For run of the mill Sierra's etc, they get a cheap plastic box- cost about $1.20
For run of the mill rollerballs they get the $3.50 flocked box.
For higher end pens they get an upmarket box.
They can upgrade if they choose.
I have one guy that buys my pens, I know he takes them home and puts them in his display case, so I keep the case and give him a discount.

Russell ,I usually put my pens in a plastic tube type case ,5/8" 3/4 " labelled with info about pen and my contact details . I have a selection of wooden pen cases singles and doubles as some folk are giving as gifts and will pay a little more for a more substancial case. Most folk buying for themselves have the pen in their pockets for ready use so the packaging is not used once they start using it .Some of the bigger pens will not fit in these Tubes, or in the single wooden pen cases . So generally the cheapest possible packaging ,Or better packaging for Higher end or the larger pens . Some of the plastic and velvet type pen cases for about $4 dollars are quite adequate for most of the "better" pens . Largely depends on your marketing strategy as to what you offer to customers , I always give a free refill with each pen sold and most folks are happy with that , cheers~John

All of my pens get a case of some kind. Depending on the pen, it will be a velvet pouch, a leather pouch, an inexpensive but nice box or a high end box. I do factor the price into the pen.

I put all my pens in a box of some sort but some people prefer that there in no box so I atleast put the pen in one of those velvet sleeves because I think they must go out in something if only just for protection.

Hey Russell I have found the same thing as you most people dont want a box which is a good sign coz that means they are going to use the pen I just give them a velvet sleeve or a draw sting pouch which seem to keep them happy I would make some custom boxes if I had the gear Ian

Right, so, pretty much horses for courses then.
Gawdelpus is the only one who mentioned customers paying extra for boxes, the rest of you seem to change the pen price depending on box provided.
So is there anyone else who has experience with customers specifically paying more on top of the pen purchase price, or does everyone else go 'Price includes box...'?

When i first started selling my pens, when meeting with customers and talking about what there need where, i had a folder with pictures of all the different stands, cases and finishes (i charge $3 to put ca on a $20 pen but its included in the higher end kits) with the prices marked next to them so they could go through and pick which ones they would like the match with each kit. I used to also take samples of everything i could. The most poplular CASE i found was the Deluxe pressed metal case. But i do give away a velvet sleeve or leather case depending on the pen kit. Hope this helps.

I sell all my pens with a velvet sleeve. I prefer it that way, if they go with a box then I suspect that's where the pen stays and isn't used. If I make a pen I want it used by the recipient otherwise what's the point of a nice pen. If the client asks for a box then I give them a few options with prices for each and let them choose. That's what I do with a $20 pen through to a $200 pen (would love to sell a few more $200 pens
CorbsIt's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

Well after posting this, the tw pens I sold that day, they asked for gift boxes and chose the deluxe velvet ones as the best look for the cheapest price *shrug*. Go figure.
