    Default Demolition Yard Find

OK so I had today off as I had to work the weekend. It was a pretty miserable day here in Brisbane. Even so I found my self rummaging around a demolition yard at Coorpooroo. I came across a small 700mm long section of timber balustrade that had been rescued from a home built in the 1950's. One end of it had been cut recently and I spotted some nice colour.

Long story short, I paid my $5 for the piece, bought it home and got to work cutting some of it into pen blanks. As you can see it turned out pretty good. Not 100% sure but I think it may be Silky Oak.

My question is, What have other people found in recycling centers/ demolition yardsThat theyve been able to re purpose?

Apologies for the quality of the pic as I took it with my phone.

great find. i love doing the scrounge

I have built the fence around 60mt of my yard from recycled timber - 90mt in total when finished, double pailing 3 rail capped, the roof over my container, the clading on the walls inside, the razed floor in the container. and now im in the process of drawing up and building a deck 4mt by 5 mt, not fixed to the house
tomorrow im grabing the tilt tray from work and picking up 12 sheats of yellow tonge flooring, that was going in the skip bin.

my daughter just looked over my shoulder and said what about the paint i did the bathroom, laundary, and main bedroom with, all leftovers from new houses around the area.

I've got a place, a km or up the road, where the local Church retrieves unwanted stuff from around the area and the tip. I make frequent trips up there and have paid a pittance for old planes, Titan Chisels and many other items which I've on-sold or used. A few months ago I asked him what he wanted for a lump of timber (around 300mm square by 500mm long) holding open his door. $5 later I was the proud owner of a lump of Redgum burl. It'll be 'refashioned' on the lathe in no time

$5 for a nice chunk of Redgum burl. You're a lucky man there Scott. I'd almost give my left eye for find like that. On second thought, maybe I'd give the right eye instead. It's the one with poor vision. Haha

Good job on the pen, looks like Merbau or Kwila to me.

Some time ago I suggested we have a forum dedicated to kerbside/demo-junk-yard finds and this thread would have made another good one for that suggestion.

I have also been able to find bits of wood that have come in handy from a recycle center. The odd can of paint.
