Disc sander advice
Quite a few of you turners use a disc sander to square the ends of your pen blanks and I have one too. I fitted a velcro adapter sheet to the metal disc of the sander in order to change the sanding sheets quickly. This backing sheet has lost its adhesion and I read somewhere that you could just use double-sided tape to re-attach the sheet and that works, sort of. What I find is that (and I only put the double-sided tape on randomly) that there is more give at certain places on the disc sander, the end result is a blank is quite visibly not square. I have found this with other velcro type attachments ie they give a little more than a flat surface thus compromising the squareness of the workpiece. Any suggestions for what to do from here, I don't like the out of square result, guess I could just take the tape off and buy another sheet, not expecting perfectly squared ends but at least something pretty close, do I give up on velcro?

Get some spray adhesive. It's used by carpet layers. It's fantastic.

Thanks Evanism, is there a particular brand you can recommend or will something from Bunnies do?

for under $10 i would just buy another velcro adapter, make sure you wipe the metal disk down with metho before you put the new one on though to get rid of all the gunk

Keep in mind that you can set your sander to square the blanks pretty well spot on, but if the hole is not drilled perfectly square to the blank then you can still get out of square problems ,eg you need to square up the ends to the glued in tubes , with a disc sander a Jig can be made to do this ,or alternatively they can be done on a lathe with a support rod in the tailstock and sanding disc in the headstock end . So many variables, hard to get them all right all the time cheers ~ John
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

To get your ends square you could make up a jig as shown below where you mount your drilled blank with tube glued in on the pin. Set up a guide at 90 degrees to the disc to sit the base up against and gently touch the end of the blank on the disc until true. This would remove the problem of blanks that are not drilled straight and ending up with ends that are not square to the bore.
You can get replacement velcro pads from here.

Thanks all for your assistance. John and Treecycle I actually have a jig that squares to the end of the tube, at the moment the disc sander is so out of whack that until I get it running as is should, nothing is going to come out square.
