First let me say well done
Your pens sure do stand out better in a well displayed display (i hope you know what I mean)

Second my only suggestion and I'm not having a go or anything just my opinion is that you lose about 30% (at a guess) display room buy using a mini orb style ridges.
What I mean by this is for every valley there is a equal rise so for example if you need a valley of 5mm then it takes up 10mm of display before you next pen.
I think for maximum use of room you would be better using something like conduit cut in half and fixed side by side.
I hope you understand what I'm saying

    Hey Texx,

Great Idea, and well made under duress, having only one shed and multiple hobbies is a PITA, I do welding, Wood Work, Wood Turning and Picture Framing all in one shed, I am in the process (Have been for nearly 12 months) of doing a walled out section in one corner 3m x 3m to do the framing, I've got one wall up. can't rush these things.

Back to the thread, I also thought about Mini Ord, and then about using the router to do a base board, and then I got distracted and now you have rekindled the thought, and I will have a look in the next week or so, I have been asked to get a lockable display box thingy so that I can sell some pens through the local Tourist Centre, I will possibly borrow your design,

i rekon grooves routed in some in inch boards would be good for sure but i never had the bit required to do the job , but that would be a good option.
on the mini orb thing its just an idea and i do think you need that bit of room between each pen to show them better , that display in the pic is made by ripping 3/4 dowel straight up the middle and glued the 3 ply with about a 8 or 10 mm gap between each dowel to give the pens some room ,would be just the same if conduit had been used but would of been a bit harder to fix the conduit into place,
or do you mean fix the conduit gully up not rise up so each one is its own valley , i think the pens would be a bit cramped up like that just my opinion that they need some room between them

I have made some work trays out of MDF that I use when making my bullet pen kits, also very handy to keep all the components for a pen you're working on together.

Just 18mm MDF grooved with a 3/4" cove bit, spacing could be adjusted to your own requirement.

For display purposes you could add the self adhesive felt or flocking.

    Looks useful, Big Shed.

Is there such a thing as a roundover/cove router bit in one? Like a cove bit but with splayed wings that will basically make a corrugated iron look in one pass? Would look a little fancier for display. [EDIT: searched McJing with no luck... over to carbi-tool to see what they have ]

I'll be making exactly what you have there as it'll be perfect for assembly.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I did mean valley side up and I based my thoughts on these display cases you can buy Pen Kits & Wood Turning | Timberbits.com I do agree with you that giving the pen more room does display the pen better I guess it is a balance one need's to work out between space and display.
