display
knocked this up to display my pens a bit better , i wont win any woodwork prizes for this effort but it will serve its purpose better than the chinese take away container i was using .
so i kind of whipped this up working in a workshop that i should not even be trying to do woodwork in at the moment because every thing is covered in welding , mechanical , metal work stuff and all that comes with it slag, grinding dust, grease, oil ,weld splatter , anyway i made a little bit of room on one corner of a bench so i could make this . i have had a few people ask about pens as xmas gifts so i thought i should make an effort to display some . it holds 30 pens so now i have to get in and make more pens .
if i can sell a few more i may be able to convince the good wife that i need a proper lathe instead of the home made one i built 30 odd years ago , i have my eye on the jet 1220 think it would be just that bit more handy than just getting a little pen size lathe .

Very nice indeed, particularly like the front mounted hinges, keeps those "light" fingers away
A few questions if you don't mind:
Some sizes would be handy (would like to make one myself), ie LxWxD
What did you use for the inserts?
Did you use glass or Perspex/Polycarbonate?
Well done

Looking good, great idea I suppose know you have to do a tutorial.
As Ray said if its not broken no need to replace it.
Looks like a good score on the mangos as well

Nothing wrong with that display case, well done, it makes the pens look just that much better. Amos

ok the size is 530 x 390 x 45 mm( fits 30 pens easy )outside measurements
its made from bu****s pine with 3 ply on the bottom also the insert is made on a piece of 3 ply so it can be lifted out for cleaning or replacing the felt should it be needed.
the lid is perspex 4mm from a sign writing place ( about 15 bucks ).
i tried several ways of fixing the perspex to the lid frame first one failed cos i was to dumb to know that you cant stick perspex with araldite to wood , so i routed a slot 1/2 deep all round the mitered lid frame ( tight fit it is too ) and that works well stiffens up the lid also .
the insert was a bit of a challenge with my limited tools and timber on hand i very nervously cut enough bits of 3/4 dowel to length then on my home made 12 inch table saw which has no rise and fall or tilt or on off switch ( just plug the motor into a cord and hope you dont need to turn it off in a hurry (6,500 rpm i think )anyway once all the dowel cut to length i ( hand held ) ripped them straight up the center ( i looked at the "D" moulding i had in the shed and did'nt think it was quite high enough , then dowel is just glued to the 3 ply ,the other 3 cross bits ( divider )are to stiffen the insert and are glued and nailed .
legs are just 90 x 19 i think not sure cut into 2 wedges screwed underneath give the whole shabang a nice angle .
oh yeah the felt i got from a craft shop could not get the size i wanted so its made up of 4 squares stuck it onto the insert using the clear water base finish that i coated the box with , just painted the insert with it then sort of moulded the felt into place and it stayed there.
P.S. the 390 measurement as you can see could be made smaller i just wanted to leave plenty of room for the length of the pens in case i ever make anything longer than the norm .

Nice looking box there texx
The only trouble with boxes is that it doesn't take long to fill them. Last count I have 5 holding around 230 and only 1 has a few empty slotsNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

actually tossing it around in my head ( cos there's plenty of room in there ) i come up with another idea for the inserts ,
you can get a corry iron think it's called "mini orb " and i would think that a bit of that stuff with felt stuck on it or left "a la natural " would make a nifty insert .what ya rekon , go on use my idea if ya like .
mentally desinging another display case as i type this , a kinda rustic thing

The Pen Box is impressive. I noticed that Amos should be able to help us all from his pics of the Melbourne Pen Show there were dozens of felted? trays around. Where do you get them Amos then the rest can be designed to accomodate the trays.
lovely truly lovely colours in your pens I am thinking of dropping my pen sizes so you can guess at mine.
Your workshop sounds like mine had a fairly awful experience on Saturday ran my left leg down the corner of a steel toolbox, lucky for me they make padded plasters in long lengths, cut a hand span and wrapped the leg in Honey and this long plaster. One of the guys in the wood guild here set himself on fire and didnt notice whilst welding and he is a journeyman engineer , fitter and welder and spent months in recovery. Try to do my cutting, welding in the driveway these days. When I tidy up everything seems so precious so very little goes in the bin. I took away 4 tons of steel and aluminium from the side yard, next is twenty years of hoarded timber.
good to see your pens and box.
Regards Peter.
