The Dreaded woodworkers pencil
Last night I made this woodworkers pencil (the kit's from Carbatec).
I'm reasonably happy with the shape, but I'm not quite sure what the timber is ... can anyone identify it?
... otherwise, comments are welcome.

Hi TT
Great looking pencil. I like the shape you have achieved with it.
Could it be burl Tasmanian Myrtle?
Thanks for sharing

I'm gonna say Red Mallee for the timber.
Nice work with the pencil, looks good.

Hi there TT ! I have a question for you on this kit, I just got some of these from carba-tech and they have no tubes ,just the mechanism was this the case with yours, and what did you do to overcome this , find some tube to fit and glue it together or leave out the tube and glue straight to the wood ,just curious ??? cheers ~ John

Jock
They are a clutch pencil and the leads are, I think about 5mm thick and very handy around the workshop.

gawdelpus ... I confirm that the kits don't come with any tubes. I am now using the longer of the two tubes that comes with the 'traditional' pen kits from timberbits. They're just the right length so that the body of the mechanism is held more securely within the tube, and you still have a good timber surface for the epoxy to bond with the threaded portion of the mechanism.
Manuka Jock ... they're known as a 'clutch pencil' ... and as Ross mentioned, they're great to have around the shop, no worrying about resharpening, as the kit has an inbuilt sharpener in the end.Regards
TT

Ah , so it is a joiner's pencil , why didn't ya say so
Carpenter's shops have fish 'n chips and pies and cakes in them .
And we use big red pencils that we sharpen with chisels

Thanks TT, I have made lots of these clutch pencils ,usually 2 types ,one with 2 tubes and one of them threaded for the pencil fitting ,with a joiner piece in the centre and a hex insert on the push end to stop them rolling, the other type has a single tube and a threaded insert to press in one end to take the mechanism, has a clip for the pocket on the push end ,I should have known if it was cheap at carba-tec there would be a catch lol. I have some brass tube ,I plan to turn off the thread on the mechanism till its a press fit on the tube ,might even make them hex or octagonal for a change hehe, cheers ~ John

gawdelpus ...
Have you got pics of the ones you've done previously? can you post some or send me a couple of images?
Also, you'll have to let me know how it goes with the carbatec pencil kit (and post pics).Regards
TT
