    Default Drill bit shanks

G`day forumites I have a slight problem at the moment. I am useing a MAGNO lathe to make some pens But the jacobs chuck will not take a7mm drill*%$#@. This is my only way of drilling at the moment is there somewhere that I can get a reduced shank.

Why won't the jacobs chuck take a 7mm bit? Is the reduced shank for the drill bit or the morse taper on the chuck?

G`day dj Its the shank of the drill bit that is too big the jacobs chuck is very small the lathe is no1 morse taper. Would holding the drill in vice grips work or not accurate enough for pens?

Geez, it must be a bloody small chuck . Shame you haven't got a MT2, could have loaned you one of my spare ones.

The shanks of the drills are normally softer the the actual drill tip, so you could get someone to machine the shank down to suit. Have done plenty before.

As your chuck does not accept the 7 mm drill then the choice is as DL says or I am sure you will be able to buy another chuck with MT1 that will accept the 7 mm drill I suggest a web search

What Sam said. There's some 1-10mm chucks with an MT1 arbor currently for sale on ebay for $19 (Ozmestore).
