Drill bit sizes
Making my first click pens (Pen-9). Now these are supposed to use a Letter O drill bit. As well as being hard to obtain, this is so little different from an 8mm bit that I thought it would not matter. But 8mm is definitely too small. And, when drilling for PRK 401 tubes, on some woods I find the 8mm too tight. 29/64" (8.33mm) and 8.5mm are too sloppy.
Metric drill bits are made in one tenth millimetre steps. Again, hard to find in stock. None of the 3 businesses in this town that call themselves trade tools or industrial supplies stocks the intermediate sizes. But in the Yellow pages I found a small Engineering Supplies business which had "hard to get items" and they stocked all the sizes.
I find the 8.1 mm drill bit is exactly right.Brian

Brian
Interested to hear of your experiences with drills, here in Canberra this was repeated by me but further to that the top brands of .1 increment drills are never accurate so I check at the point of sale, then when I get home measure again and write on the shank in textra the correct size, reason for textra is the acid etched markings are hard to read at the best of times but in a hurry a real test of patience. The only brand I choose to name are DeWalt extreme 2 drills I use in 7mm that are so consistent in quality for my drilling Slimline pen blanks that I have said ad nausium{do not know what that means ] but it sounds ok.Thank you for your help. Here in Canberra we are in a larger backwater being so far from manufacturers. Thanks Peter
