Drill sizing
Gents. Silly me having trouble sizing imperial to metric in drill sizes. What I do not understand is do you really get drill 9.12mm, 8.73mm????? The scale I use shows 23/64 is 9.12mm and 11/32 is 8.73mm, and 27/64 is 10.7mm. Is there a listing somewhere that shows all the relevant drill conversion for pen making?

Cookie48,
Relax mate lets face it there are umpteen charts on Google relax and live in the world as it is led by England, Europe and America each with their standard measurements.
Most companies check them out here and abroad have done the hard yards follow their instructions to make the various pens. You can still buy both metric and Imperial drills easily, same as bearings, drive belts etc. No probs have success. Only true thing is if you REALLY want accuracy measure every drill you buy apart from pen work I do.I mark the baggie and keep them this way before I drill I check again.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

For pen making precision is not really critical as you are drilling various mediums from wood to bone plastics and stone ,I got a metric and an imperial drill gauge off Ebay ( a plate with drilled holes that are stamped with the various sizes, I simply take the tube and fit it in the nearest size hole with some clearance for gluing .it's only when you go over the 1/2 " or 13 mm that the gauges don't cover and you may need to measure ,in practice only some of the larger pens and high end kits get this big ,sometimes you can drill the right size and the wood will shrink and be tight ,a few rubs with a rat tail rasp or file will usually give you enough clearance for glue .
