Latest effort
Have been doing some more practising on the pen front.
Two more pens finished, still continuing with the "found or recycled" theme.
First one is a slimline (hey, I don't have any other kits yet!) using a gunmetal kit with grey box, from the wood pile!
Finish is CA, about 4 coats, then Shellawax.
Given this one to my grandson for his 17th birthday, it was very rewarding to see his face light up, I actually think he appreciated the pen more than the money.
Second one is another slimline, this time a copper kit, using Western Red Cedar from a now demolished garden bench.
This timber was harder to achieve an acceptable finish on, used CA/BLO, then Shellawax. Took a few more applications though, very soft absorbent timber.
Rather pleased with the timber/kit combinations.
Although the kits are only cheap Chinese ones, they allow affordable practising sessions.
Am now awaiting the arrival of a few Perfect Fit kits with both pen and pencil inserts.
One of these will be for the Pen Swap.
Also had to buy another (B) mandrel, 2 drills and bushes for these kits.

Wow, you've come a long way since your first one, you have done an exceptional job there. I suppose that you now know that the bushes aren't quite right, so you're allowing for it.
Really like the Greybox oneCheers

Looking good biggy
The use of recycled is good too. I use a lot of fallen timber as well such as myall and bullock bush and a very nice timber is african boxthorn. I had a few to erradicate from our block and as the limbs were about one to one and a half inch thick decided to try them and was pleased with the results.
Always pays to check out small fallen limbs from fruit trees as well.

Big Shed
Like the kits that clip sets them off and the centre band has that small detail. Two favourites the Gun Metal and Copper fit in with the timbers used.I have never used Western Red Cedar for a pen to me it appears to have a grain that came through well,is it splintery or does it chip at all.
Both pens are fine.
Good of you to show them, the gifted one sure was a nice present, the other just as or for me the better pen.

Fred, they look good. It is true, some of the softer woods are difficult to get a shine on with CA, sometimes if I know it is a softer more porous type of wood, I firstly apply EEE, then 0000 steel wool, then CA, then Shellawax. Amos

Peter, the WRC turns very easily, at least the stuff I have. No splintering or excessive chipping.
I rough turned the blanks with a 1/2" gouge, then changed to small skew chisel.
The kits are cheap Chinese ones obtained from a fellow forumite.
Amos, haven't used EEE yet, so much to learn, it is fun though!
The other finish I want to have a go with is the Rustins.
Next project will be some jarrah pens, as soon as the Perfect Fit kits arrive from Bear Tooth Woods.

Nice work Big Shed I thought you were an old hand at pen turning etc.
Although I have a wood turned pen or two made by other turners I never used them nor have I opened them to see what type of refills they take. The various kits I have seen on the net and at shows never seem to have these in the kits.
Do you buy the seperate
