Light Boxes?
Looking for something to help my pen photography, browsing around Ebay I found this
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/STUDIO-IN-A-BOX-PHOTO-LIGHT-TENT-PHOTOGRAPHY-SET-80CM_W0QQitemZ280282152809QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item280282152809&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1308
**EDIT** Scratch that, bad advert, I realise how it works now **EDIT**
I'm sure I could make something a lot cheaper, but it's the time & searching for materials that's a pain.
I see a similar one from China, but that's alwasy iffy. Anyone seen anything better?

I use something very similar. I think that price is reasonable considering you are getting two lights on tripods, the light tent, the extra backdrops, and a carry bag. When I bought mine, I purchased the 18" tent and they threw in a 12" for free. The latter is what I use for my pens. I don't know about the kit you listed, but my lamps came with special trumpet bulbs made for the application.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

I have a setup for taking pics that is certainly a poor man's version of a light box. I simply bought 4 sheets of foam core from a craft store and set them up like a box with no top and one side missing. Then with all the lights on around I set up my camera to take my pics. It worked great for me.
Here is the result for a picture I took of a wooden box I made
Hope this helps.

Ok I've found another one that looks like a great deal. Although it's from China, the wording is better English than the poorly worded Australian one that is slamming the chinese versions, go figure.
They have a couple of variations, a 60cm and a 40cm. The lights are slightly different between the two as well. Do you reckon 40cm is sufficient? I do have some other stuff it'd be useful for too. My boomerangs are approaching 30cm x 30cm, so 40cm may be a squeeze.

See what you have done Russell. You made me depart with my hard earned cash again. The seller should send a referral cheque to you for advertising their business.
I have been looking for one of these boxes for a while now. Didn't want to depart with the cash as they are very expensive in Australian stores. Thank god for eBay. It makes our life so much easier and cheaper.
Thanks Russell for finally making me buy the item.

Ahh well, I caved and bought one too. Went for the 60cm - 40cm may have been a little small, 80cm gets a bit unweildy trying to find somewhere to use it.

Seems to be a fairly large amount of money to pay for what is essentially two lights and a frame with a light diffuser over it

with the kids - try bounce flash ie bounce the flash off the ceiling or a wall. Stops the harsh shadows and is much more flattering to the subject

I figured that of the $172, $20 is shipping if you buy anything in Australia, which brings the price down to $152.
The tripods are worth at least $50 each with the light fitting, which brings the price down to $52 for the diffuser.
The trays are worth at least $10 each, which brings the price down further to $32.
I think the $32 is worth the diffuser and pain of trying set something up yourself. I would probably spend hours trying to find the right lights in Australia etc... days and weeks later still not have the right gear.
A professional setup like that would cost almost a thousand if you went to a photographic store, not to mention the time etc.
I already bounce of ceiling etc, but I want to take photos of the kids in cubby houses and boxes where bouncing is not a option. Also with portrait's, bouncing can be difficult to achieve.

O.K. Here's what I purchased. http://store.tabletopstudio-store.com/specials.html
Look over the website and you will see that they have specialty kits for jewelry and other things. The fabric cubes fold completely flat with a simple twist and spring back open with another twist making storage a breeze. An instuction book comes with the setup and, when used correctly, you will have no shadows or hot spots in your photographs. I have no affiliation with this company. I am just a satisfied customer. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
