    Default An experiment

I had wanted to turn some Serpentine with Stichtite rock that I had.

This is only available a couple of places in the world, and one is Mt Dundas in Tas.

Unfortunately the rock was too fractured to turn so I decided to crush it and embed it in resin.

Left the brass to show through, but if I did it again I would colour the tube emerald green I think.

Great looking pen with such an unusual blank.

To the uninitiated I think the "gold" highlights add to the overall effect.

To us penmakers, it says "tube showing", so perhaps you're right to paint the next tube green.

    Very stylish overall though

On first glance, the tube does actually blend quite well with the rock, so no great loss on this on. Even a black tube may show it well. Certain is a nice effect as is.

What's Stichtite rock? Must have been harsh on the chisels turning actual chips of stone though.

    Nice looking pen

I like the brass showing through in 2D but does it look like there is something missing when you have your pen up close and personal?
If so could you fill the gaps with brass powder?

    Russell,

The stichtite is the purple pieces that are the rare portion, serpentine is fairly common I think.

Wasn't too bad an oh the chisel, sanded on the disc sander until roughly shaped then a light scrape and more sanding.

Will coat the tube in Serpentine dust next time and see what that does.

I just read whatever I could get hold of, here, IAP and Yutube were the best.

I always use pressure, which has worked thus far, will set up a vaccumm when i get time.
