Experiments in lamination
After a few discussions on laminations using metals I decided to play with a few Sierra tubes. Materials used were coke can, black cardboard, aluminium foil & purple plastic from an ice cream container. Will discuss the blanks from left to right...
Blank 1 - Jarrah, Huon & Ebony. There is a few folds of aluminium foil between the Jarrah & Huon but even with about four thicknesses it is barely visible. The Ebony on this blank is to cover a blowout.
Blank 2 - Jarrah & Huon. The first two photo's are the making of this blank. the two straight lines are my outsides of the tube so the squiggle needed to stay within these margins. Lamination is as follows: card, can, card, card, can, card and all glued with Techniglue epoxy. The can was sanded on both sides with a 240 grit.
Blank 3 - Jarrah & Huon. I stood this blank on the bandsaw and cut halfway through then sanded out the gap to allow a smooth fit with two pieces of plastic & one aluminium.
All laminations were with techniglue. The first two will not become pens, first has a gouge where the skew dug in and the second has a couple of blowouts (got a bit impatient). Third is good to go and just need to get a kit for it.
Enjoy,

Good Effort. From what I can see in the image, the outer edges look a little fuzzy. I wonder whether the can on the outsides & the card in the middle would give it a crisp edge? Shame about the second blank, the double metal line looks good.
Good result either way.

how did you find the jarrah and huon to turn, one being soft the other bloomin hard?
don't ya just hate it when you do all the hard work and then bugger it up near the endregards

Thanks guys, as I have said the first two blanks won't become pens as I am not happy with the finish on them.
Boomerang, the can on the outsides might give more support whilst turning and I might play with the idea in future experiments.
SM, I turned to round using a small spindle gouge and then finished with a 13mm oval skew. I orientated the blank so I was cutting from the Jarrah to the Huon and took my time on the transition. Didn't have any problems doing it this way. Think going from hard to soft would be easier than the other way around? It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.
