Great looking Pen!
Just a point that might be worth noting if people are thinking about going out to find some ex-railway sleepers to turn - recently in Melbourne the authorities were warning about the health hazards associated with this wood due to hazardous chemicals in the wood after years of use. See article from The Age - Danger warning on stolen rail sleepers
Thought it might be worth mentioning.
Cheers,
Fletch

The pen is abolutely beautiful, gives a new meaning to recycling! I was very curious, was this timber/sleeper soaked in creosote? The sleepers (railway ties) in Canada are, and I remember very clearly a fire involving ties, many years ago, was extremely hot, just because of the creosote.

As far as I can make out these are not soaked in creasote, Amos

Looking at articles on the web there is a good chance that creosote was used in Jarrah railway sleepers as it has been a popular preservative for 150 years. Might be best to use a good dust mask for that timber just in case. CA would undoubtedly seal it as long as the new pen owner hasn't got a habit of biting on the pen. SA Railways would be able to give you advice on creosote use or you can do your own test - OilScreenSoil (creosote)® - Product Catalogues - TPH Tests for Soil, Water and Solid Surfaces, (LNAPL & DNAPL) field screening test kits if you are concerned.
I don't know that asbestos would be a problem if it only came from the brakes of the trains. Not too many trains would be braking along that stretch of track.
Damn fine pen thoughLast edited by plantagenon; 20th November 2012 at 06:39 PM. Reason: additional information

Hey Amos,
Brilliant Pen
I would have to say Jarrah, as I have some that could be the brother to your pen, and about 10 other colours.
