Thread: Finally, one for me.

Finally, one for me.
Most everybody in the family has a pen by now and any friend who has had a birthday in the past two months has received a pen. It was time to build one for me. This is a Churchill kit and the wood is bocote. I replaced the Berea refill with a Waterman refill (part number 604) so it writes as good as it looks. This one is all mine.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

That Bocote Churchill is some instrument, worth waiting for a two weeks before your birthday, fine way to reward yourself.Did it come in blank or plank form? Was it already cut on the cross?Where does it grow?Is it smooth to turn?Curious to know more.I believe you have a great pen there.

Good stuff! The Bocote looks great in cross-grain. I'm a tad surprised you didn't lay claim to one of your first, though.
After all the pens I've done, "my" pen is still one of the very first I ever turned. I was sooo proud of it at the time, a Red Crushed Velvet slimline. Now, I look at it and think "I could've done better" but just can't bring myself to disassemble it and touch it up. Can't buy the old Crushed Velvet acrylic blanks anymore either... so it's a bit of a tease. Of all the acrylics, that was the only type I ever really liked.

Thanks Tas, but no. That's the "new" Crushed Velvet, which is very... "coarse," while the old stuff gave a result was very close to the actual fabric. Lovely stuff, if I'd known back then that 'twas a limited resource I would've done my best to buy it out...
(Sorry for the Hijack, Cisco. But that's life. )

Thank you for the kind comments. Bocote is now one of my favorite pen woods. In answer to some of your questions; I have large planks of the stuff and can quite easily get more. I cut it on the cross myself after experimenting one day and liking the result. Most of it grows in South America and the East Indies. It's real name is Cordia Alliodora of the family Boraginaceae. It is a moderately heavy timber weighing approximately 60 pounds per cubic foot. It turns well enough, but blunts tools more than others I can name. I had to sharpen my gouge half way through this one. It sands to a moderately high gloss and excepts most finishes and stains well, although I can't imagine staining it. There is simply Shellawax on my pen.
Once Froggie gets some answers from your Customs blokes, I will be happy to be instrumental in getting you all as much as you want. The planks I have available to me are about 6 to 8 inches wide and a little over an inch thick. Lengths are around 8 feet. I think you all would enjoy some Kingwood also. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

G'day Addicts,
Isn't it funny that when customs want an answer about something from you they expect it yesterday but when you want something from them it is a different story, they are supposed to be sending me out an information pack but I haven't recieved it yet I will chase it up tomorrow.
Cheers
