Default a few pressies for the rellies

Here are a few presents made on the lathe for my mum, dad and grandmother (still going strong at 83). All are made from blackwood my father cut on our Sth Gippsland property 30 years ago.

Dad gets the Chrome Jr Gent rollerball and pencil.

Mum gets the shawl pin (not really a pen, but what the hey, I'll put it here anyway) - she makes her own shawls and has been bugging me for one since I got the lathe. The little brooch component was fun to make - first attempt was with a jury-rigged mandrel, which didn't run true and the blank broke 1/2 way through. Second attempt was with it hot-glued to a circle of pine held in the chuck jaws, which worked a treat. The best part was at the end when the heat from applying the shellawax glow softened the glue enough that I could peel the brooch away cleanly when finished.

Nanny gets the gold Jr Gent rollerball on a stand my wife calls "like a small beach lounge" (made from the only bit of hardwood scrap I had big enough to get the curve in, some Forest Red Gum).

Nice set there. Your family connection to the timber make them extra special.

Nice set there Micheal, nothing like a hand made gift from the heart specially when they are as well made as them.

Like them all, but the beach lounge stand is pretty neat, great idea, might just borrow the idea....

Thank you all, we had an early present exchange because this year is our turn with the inlaws (which is not a bad thing at all, coz they are lovely people and the food/drink is magnificent), and they went down a treat.

The pen stand was pretty straight forward. I just cut out a 6cm radius circle from a wide board with a circle jig on my bandsaw. Then, from the circle, I cut inside it a 5cm radius circle, giving me a 1cm thick hollow rim. I cut into it at the points of weakness, then chose one bit for the stand and the other for the legs. The stand bit I drilled part-way into one end to make a depression for the pen to sit in, and at the other end I used a dremel with mini drum sander attachment to carve a U-shape.

The leg half, I trimmed the feet so they would sit flat, then split it lengthways using the bandsaw again. Sanded to 400grit then, I just epoxied it together and finished with tung oil. I've got a few other designs on the same theme I'm planning on trying too, but they need me to buy wood, rather than use up scraps, so it may be a while happening
