    Default Finishing false sandalwood

    Hi everyone,

Today I turned a cigar from false sandalwood and noticed when sanding that it's a very resinous timber.

In my experience, similar timbers usually do well without a finish, but I've never turned a timber this lightly coloured with such an oil content. I usually don't put a finish on the likes of African Blackwood because it just ends up looking like plastic, but that's basically pure black. Same with lignum, just because the natural shine is quite nice.

Should I just oil and buff to give it a natural feel and sheen, or attempt lacquer? I know both can work but I'm wondering how others have approached the problem before. I've never turned this stuff before even though I have several logs of it, but I was really impressed by how well it turned.

    Regards,

    Eisbaer

I have wiped mine down with metho to shift the oil the other trick is to seal it with Shellawax and then do a lacquer finish of choice

Thanks Sam. I was thinking about sealing first then putting on lacquer. The more I look at it the more I think a nice gloss will suit it.

Not that I claim to be an expert on the subject but, I always wipe down with Metholated Spirits any oily type wood. Give it 10 minutes to fully dry then CA finish. I have had ZERO problems with the CA finish taking perfectly to the wood.
