    Default Finishing a timber/resin pen

I'm sure this would have been covered previously, and looking through old posts I couldn't really find what I was looking for, so I apologies if it's been done to death.

I'm finishing off a banksia nut that was filled with resin. When finishing, do I sand to my usual 600 like I would for timber, then Micromesh the blank to get the resin looking great, then do my usual ca timber finish?

Or will the micromesh on the raw banksia nut be ripped apart from the timber fibers?

I will be doing a few with different timbers, not just the banksia nut so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Gab

I haven't done any Banksia nuts yet, but with my Sheoak seed pods, I just stabilise the pods as I turn the blank down, sand to 600, then apply a CA finish over the pods and resin blank. I would think you could do your Banksias the same way.
If they have been stabilised already, it would be even better.

Sanding to 600 is good practice, the banksias can be quite hard ,but the fine sanding does bring out the fine grains ,as with any composite of wood and acrylics you do need a CA finish to get a nice even gloss, and it also helps lock in the small colored bits that sometimes pop out Enjoy the Journey cheers~John

I agree with Ironwood, just sand as per normal and don't use the micromesh at this stage. If you sand it too fine the CA doesn't have much to key in to. Make sure you put a decent thickness of CA on to help hold the 2 different components together as the resin does not adhere to the wood type medium very well.
