Cutting Abalone veneers
Thats right lets talk paper cutters. Has anyone used a paper cutter like the guiliteen style with the arm to cut Abalone veneer strips??? I was thinking the other day that this might be the ticket to cutting thin strips of Abalone. If so what type do you have and does it do a good job??
If you have not done this but still can recomend a very good cutter that cuts straight and true and the blade will last when cutting shell material such as abalone I would greatly appreciate a name. Thanks.

John not tried this , I imagine a small Paper guillotine would be fine ,depending on the thickness of your laminate . I suspect that it would be a bit difficult to keep all the slices in correct order for gluing up , Maybe an alternative would be to "score the lines with something suitable that doesn't cut right through the material , I think its quite brittle but would bend Or break along a line without too many problems . But only suggestions hehe !
cheers ~ JohnG'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Biggest problem is the cut will be vertical, whereas they are better on angle to ensure top edges meet perfectly at surface, assuming you want to glue them on a tube joined.
Personally I found cutting them with random or zig-zag scissors then stagger them slightly (ie gap between them). I also leave a gap at either end, giving a small band at either endNeil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

I do not really care about gaps. For the way I want to use them the gaps will be hidden when glued to tube. I can cut them with a razor knife but was looking for more accuracy and with the cutter I can make a jig to hold at exact size. May have to spring for one and give it a try. I can always use it for other things I am sure.
