    Default That was Fun !

After seeing what was being done with banksias I just had to try some . That was quite a challenge with unstabalised banksia nuts ,after drilling carefully I ended up with a nice "wooden" lattice work hehe ! filled holes with CA and dust , a couple of whitish spots and a few not filled properly so you can see the brass in a couple of places ,my eyes were not up to it this time ,next time will try a magnifier hehe! Overall it passes my wifes workmates "wow" what do they no hehe,

G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

That looks pretty cool! How was it to turn the banksia down to that size? Was it a large nut to start with?

Well done, now you can try other fillers like brass/copper/silver/malachite/turquoise etc. When you use the thin CA, don't put it directly on the filler, place the tip adjacent to the hole so it fills via capillary action. This will help avoid the white forming, you need to avoid ponding the thin CA

Thanks for that info Neil The buggers were so small I had to use 2 cones to get the length ,and while drilling I could see the drill as it took out the small core ,basically had a lattice when finished ,used a painted tube but the CA took off the paint .Next time I will spray it before turning ,through the holes in the lattice , See if I can find some "fatter " ones next time lol.

I found the fatter ones don't always work better, they look better with more holes like you have, but they do have to be fatter than your brass tube

Nice work... I like it a lot. I think I have some nuts out in the shed, might have to break some out on the weekend

    Nice looking pen
What finish did you use, assuming you used one
You say that you used ca to fill the holes, but they look unfilled
I wonder whether the paint on the tubes would not lift if you used two part epoxy

And this is my 4th attempt to post this rotten computer

I like the look , I was going to try and stabilize mine { after I learn't how } But I don't think I'll wait, how did you do the turning { eg fill first and then turn or the other way around ?} and am very curios about what sort of finish { not CA I hope because I can't get it to work for me
    Cheers

these were more of your bottle-brush type cones, I sanded a lot of the extra bits off the nut to make turning easier, definately fill before turning and drilling to add some strength to the blank, as it can be quite fragile depending on what sizes you are making ,eg tube dia. 8 mm tubes would be good hehe ! I had some trouble finishing ,tried u-beaut "glow" my favourite wood finish,in this case not happy and tried the BLO CA slightly better but still not good, I am going to try a wipeon finish on it today as a last resort hehe.Sharp tools and gentle cuts is the way to go, and because I am basically a coward I resorted to sand paper for the last couple of mm to get to size worked fine I think ! good luck with it as it is worth the effort when done . cheers~ John
