    Default Gentleman's pen Ancient Kauri

This pen is another for the gallery well that is how it started
I was going fine only a few more passes with the skew and I would be done. I thought gee I'm glad I did not stuff this one up to thick it has survived 50,000 years just to come to and be thrown in the scrap bin and then yes you guessed it a big chunk came flying off I tried to glue it back on but it was so obvious it was not funny. I found a small piece of Ebony and attached that to the bottom. I think it has come up alright but to us pen makers it is pretty obvious that it is a stuff up band
    I hope you like it.

nice save... it'd be tough to know what to do. I guess if it was run of the mill wood it would have been turfed, but this came out looking OK.

    Good luck witht he gallery.

    Cheers,

I know it may be a bit late now ,but some black at each end for balance ,and then it looks deliberate hehe. I am yet to try this wood, nothing worthy has come to me yet hehe, yours look like they were very satisfing to do , in spite of a hiccup I never go right to the bushes on these sorts of jobs as sandpaper is a good turning tool as well hehe, and never had a catch at a crucial time doing it that way .Cheers ~ John

Yep, nice save. It would have been a pity to see it sent to the scrap bin.
I try and do new things twice.. the first time to see if I can do it.. the second time to see if I like it

I always look at the pictures before I do any reading. I didn't even notice the ebony until you mentioned it.

Great save. Good luck at the gallery.

    Thanks for sharing.

Looks good to me; don't tell people it's a stuff up and they'll never know. I did a similar thing recently and showed it to some people at work, I made the mistake of telling them I'd had a blowout, they all thought it was done that way on purpose.

Crafty old fox John I agree though, a bit of black both ends of the pen does add something to it.

I think you did a good job on the save RP and the pen looks great. Well done

Hi RP. Don't know how you prepare the wood but I've found ancient kauri very difficult to turn as it is almost "crumbly" sometimes. I've often experienced your problem. To increase my success rate I apply CA to the end grain before turning and as I get close to the final size, I apply more CA to the whole blank, especially near the ends. It's such a nice looking timber when polished that it's worth the effort. Denis

I rather like it. It looks planned, makes the pen unique, and matches the narrow black band in the middle.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
