Thread: My gift to our Doctor.

My gift to our Doctor.
Our Doctor has been magnificent to both Wilma now 2/3 through Chemo and me over a period of time now (I have 2 more ops to go).
Garry Nicholls cast this blank for me and I used David (Timberbits Australiana) kit for it.. The Doc has become a close friend and wears those huge watches including the skeleton types and received the Pen very graciously.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Be careful Penpal ... your doc may schedule some 'extras' for a matching pencil or fountain pen!!!!
That is lovely and I am sure he/she will enjoy using it!

Terrific looking pen Peter. Your Doc should be impressed with that one. All the best health-wise for you and your wife. You've got plenty of mates here on the forum that care.
I never forget anything I remember !!

Thanks everyone,
You know me rambling on but we both appreciate your kind thoughts that have come from around Australia and around the world. Wilma lines up for Chemo no 5 next Tuesday then three weeks after her final Chemo it is debilitating and cruel for her, then she has Radiotherapy four of supposed not so cruel and localised. We anticipate our 57th Wedding Anniversary in July being in a happier time.
On a happier note extended my blank fortress today, scored some Dental handpieces on the last weekend, have a swap partner in the USA IAP weird swap, received my Australia Day swap from Don Ward (Red River Pens) hope to take pics soon, a real nice guy in the states sent me two Alligator jaw blanks especially one to make for Wilma in her favourite colour. By the way Wilma and I have been best buddies for nigh on 60 yrs when asked recently her favourite colour and it turned out to be red bless me I would have thought something else. Proves I never take her for granted only seek to enjoy her company.
Repaced the bearings on my VL100, guess what the main shaft key had no less than four marks where the main pulley is locked to the shaft sometimes you just dont know where your brand new at the time lathe has been used or whatever before you buy.
I have overcome the major problem I had of nesting the Mandrel shaft into the brass sleeve in the Live Centre, by drilling a 6.1 accurately measured drill first, then a super quality fixed reamer 6.2 mm then using a 5 mm end mill cocked slightly to cut the poofteenth (sorry for using tech terminology) to accurately match the mandrel.
Know we go for and I use them on the VL100 Collet chuck mandrel combinations well on another old lathe this time Woodfast 60,s a small three jaw chuck modified from my Hercus Metal Lathe to hold the mandrel in the head stock to allow changes of mandrels, size and length as I negotiate other pens ie some others from Slimlines. Together with no kit ideas I have circulating in my mind.
Received also two American Quarter blanks made by Seamus in Texas one for my Daughter in Utah (Utah Quarter) and one for me Washington Quarter. Our daughter in Utah came for ten days at Xmas after Wilmas op in Dec last year to help and be with us and is coming back in all of July again. I already have had made for her by Cpt. G Garry in America a faximile copy of the American Declaration of Independance 11 inches by 14 inches on 3/4 inch fabulous timber. This originally in the 1700.s signed by a cousin of mine who was a member of the Legislature, friend of George Washington who emmigrated to the USA in the 1700.s from Scotland so very significant to us, this girl in Utah is our family history buff. Garry Lazer cut the faximile.
So lots of excitement for me preparing and acheiving.
Kind regards Peter.Nil Desperandum

Amazing Pen
Pete congratulations on turning such an amazing pen, it it beautiful. I bet your doctor was very appreciative.
I wish you and Wilma all the best with your health issues in the future. Sorry I have not been on here to offer support before as I have been under the weather myself and have to have further tests....
Take care and all the best,
Marg.
