A Gift Pen and Pen Turning For The Troops
The Princeton I turned for the display at Woodcraft was really liked by the owners wife. So I took the other end of the blank and made this pen for Rosemary.
It will be the last time I turn one of these pieces of timber. As you turn the dye is a powder and it gets all over everything, me, the lathe and the dog.
It's Woodcraft Buckeye Burl blank dyed red. 6+ (I lost count and was interrupted) coats of Med CA. It was a balmy 5 Degrees C in the garage.
I've spend the greater part of the last two days helping with the Woodcraft Annual 'Turning For The Troops' and I took my 8 year old grandson to turn his first pen.

Thank you Amos ...
I got him started turning and was helping two other kids and one of the store employes was keeping an eye on him also.
He took such light cuts he was driving me crazy
Finally Rick said, "you can take bigger cuts it's ok" ... Brennan said, "no, grampa makes a big fuss over fit and finish and I want to do it like he does" ... makes you kind of proud
... the pen was really very nicely done but I couldn't talk him out of leaving that center band off the timber <G>
On the way home he says, "Can we go home and can I use your lathe to make more pens?"

I looked yesterday at the responses but after 11+ day at work and then 6 hours at Woodcraft for the Pen Turning for the Troops and then our annual Pen Turners Pot Luck I was a little pooped to respond ...
Thank you sir ... wife (she has this look in her eye if you know what I mean) says that he needs a good male influence in his life and I stood looking around and I was the only one standing there.
Nick ... when I saw the preview pics of the pen I wasn't too impressed with it. After volunteering to turn their three different finishes they carry I can say it is comfortable to write with. I'll also say by far and wide it's those that have the "Y" Chromosome that like the shape best.
Singlet and shorts weather
Now that'd make any man happy better get him a lathe for xmas
congrats on a fine effort
