Goodbye CA, Hello CA/BLO!!!
Hey folks,
Well after struggling to get an easy CA finish for months, I found this thread on IAP using CA/BLO and decided to give it a try.
All I can say is, I'm in heaven.
Got 6 coats of medium CA on in about 3 minutes (as simple as a friction finish), no mess, no sanding, no drying time, no bits of paper stuck to the blank. One paper towel was all I needed. Hit it with a brasso rub, and it's done!! The whole pen from mounting the blank on the lathe to finished was maybe 15 minutes! Quickest pen I've ever done I think.
There is one glitch on the finish, which was my fault I believe, but for a first time effort, and comparing with my old CA finishes, this will be my modus operandii until I find flaw with it.

Good one Russell ! I looked at this a week or so ago ,and looks like my sort of "quick fix" lol. so far done a bunch of acrylics for the markets , so not had a real chance to practise it, also think my medium ca is buggered hehe, the photo does not show if its a shiny gloss ,or satin sheen ? might try the mitre fix, its fairly thick though , cheers
G'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!

Can't argue with success..
But as always, the finish is only as good as the prep.

Actually I'm wondering if too much BLO might have been one issue with my burl that was a bit inconsistent. Also a seal with straight CA first instead of BLO might help.
As for where you get it, it's pretty common from what I've seen. Most hardware stores should have it. I've assumed, but never checked, that it's actually called "Pale Boiled Linseed Oil" here. Either it's just a lighter coloured version, or just a different name to what our friends O.S. call BLO, I think.
"Boiled" oils have checmical additives which makes them dry quicker. Raw linseed old might take weeks to cure, BLO takes days. In the case of this finish, BLO dries in seconds.
The additives also make these oils highly combustible, so proper disposal of oil soaked rags is essential (and something I forgot to do one the weekend!!)

Russell
thanks for all the comments and the discussion
Have finally looked at the video. Will have to give it a go on the weekend
I wonder whether with some of our burls whether we should do a ca slurry sand before the ca/blo finish. I just throw it out there for comment, as I've no idea reallyregards

Here is a written tutorial about the CA/BLO finish. It is a PDF written by Mike in Nainamo at A Penturners Paradise.
