    Default Green Themed Pen

The wood turning club I belong to has arranged for the members to show off work in display cases in a local shopping mall this spring. They decided on "Green" as a theme for the pieces. I decided to make a pen from Staghorn Sumac, a small tree with wood that grows in varying degrees of green wood. I paired it with an old Canadiana kit I've had for a long time, put on a CA finish and polished it with the 3 Beall buffing wheels. The light tent doesn't show off the high shine though.

    Handsome looking pen Pete.
Never heard of the timber before, but sounds interesting.
Is it a Canadian native ?

As far as I know is native to eastern North America. It does grow on the west coast where it is usually used as a decorative tree since they don't grow very tall. The leaves turn nice colours in the fall. The wood is one of the few that fluoresce under black light. Might not want to have a pen of it in your pocket at a dance club though. Someone might say "Oh your little thingy is glowing!".

Nicely made pen and it's a shame the gloss doesn't show up when done under lights as I like the gloss look.
Funny how kits are known by different names in different parts of the world. Over here that kit used to be called a Cambridge then they changed the little black centre band to gold and renamed it Roman Harvest.
