hairy oak
about a year ago i asked an old farmer here who lives a fair way out of town if he had any hairy oak on his place he said he did but was not keen on cutting any down so i let it drop .
anyway yesterday while i was out on my farm he dropped a piece of very dead very dry cracked up hairy oak to my wife in our shop in town , so last night i cross cut a few bits of it and drilled and glued ( and that was a challenge )today turned up a pen to give him as a thank you next time he comes to town which is normally only every 3 weeks or so .
working with this stuff ( my first time ) cross cut when its this old and dry is interesting to say the least , one blank even fell to bits while drilling ,it hates getting hot and falls to bits along the rays at the drop of a hat ,but i had a win in the end , still working on this guy he said i may be a chance next time he is up the back as he calls it there may be a few trees there that need to be cut ,

Nicely done texx and a great little story to go with the pen. You have done a great job with the Hairy Oak. Crosscut is not the easiest to work with but you have done well. Nice finish too.
Reality is no background music.

just did another one tonight pic taken inside with flash .
did this one with the grain rather than across and gave it a gold kit instead of chrome .
it had 2 tiny little knots which i had to hit with some CA and one hair line crack which i cant even find now .
this stuff is very dry and quite fragile .
with a timber i have never used before i always like to do a couple with the cheaper kits first before i use it on a dearer kit .
i am getting a new blade for my clunker bandsaw ( meat saw ) on wednesday then i can slice up some more blanks .
i have 2 brand new broken blades for it that i have had 3 or 4 tries at rejoining with silver solder but failed every time . whats that got to do with these pens , nothing at all just me going off on another tangent .

Love hairy oak, and they are great pens
My first pen was made from it, and I still like the look of it!
Cheers,
Dave
