Thread: Half Finished SN Gent Help Needed

I use 7mm Corian inserts to fit inside the kit tubes that I want to mill the blank end square with the tube.
Another way I have solved this problem is the place the blank between centers and use a parting tool to square up the blank ends with the tube.

Ian heres the two ways I square up my blanks avoiding having to use a trimmer.
Firstly I use a simple sliding jig on disc sander (used to get the blanks roughly square only) once I have turned to size and prior to polishing or applying my chosen finish I use a transfer punch (as close to the internal size of the barrel as I can get ) set up as you see in the attached pics. The sand paper is attached to a piece of delrin/acetal which is fixed to an old MT2 pen mandrel. Hope this helps. BTW the transfer punches are available from either McJings or GPW.

I agree with Trev. I take the excess timber off the blank with the disc sander as shown and get it back to the end of the tube. That should square it up nicely if you have the belt sander set up. After applying CA I do the same thing and remove excess CA and square the blank on the lathe same as shown in Trev's photos. It works well and you will get close to perfectly square ends.

+1 for what was already said, but if you are really desperate and don't have transfer punches, an old drill bit that the tubes fits onto can be used, ( did it once but then bought the punches from Gary( the joy of a half drive away)

Mate thanks for the info hey I will get some of those punches soon. Had a call from Ian (Dorno) today and we had a little chat about the issue which was good for me as I have never made such a chunky pen before so I have a simple solution to the problem now which wont take long to sort so thanks Ian for the phone much appreciated mate and thanks to u all for u input on this issue

Hey Ian,

I have some sleeves turned up from black poly, that have a 1/4 inch hole in the centre, and the OD suits the tube, dead square every time, I can buzz a couple for you if you like.

Ok so this what I am gonna do for a quick fix. A piece of eko deck with a 7mm tube glued in it then I will turn it down to fit inside the SN Gent cap ;-)

Saw me mate HazzaB at work today and he had something for me ) thanks mate works at treat just tested it out and it's a nice flush trim so will finish the cap off tomorrow after work ;-)

I'd throw away that barrel trimmer and use the techniques described above. You are asking for trouble with embedded/cast products. Trimmers get blunt quickly on these and will tear the ends, drag the cast products out, debond your resins etc. A blunt trimmer will also crush/drag end grain on plain timber pens too if not kept sharp.

Oh ok I have never had any trouble with my ones probably coz I sharpen them atleast once a week lol but until I have the right equipment they will have to do ;-) thanks for the info mate
