Default What happened to all the Black Titanium kits?

My self-professed return to penmaking is lagging a little, as I've been fighting with my 'new' CNC machine for over 3 months now, and it's still not yet working.

However, I've had a special request for a pen from BOW, for a 'blokey bloke'. I suggested Black titanium might be the way to go, as gold was perceived as too girly, chrome too cheap, and rhodium too expensive. Also a squarer, chunkier pen was requested. So I went through my kit collection, which I purchased several years ago, looking for a black titanium Baron or similar, but find I've used all my old ones up. So off I go to my two favourite suppliers, Timberbits and GPW, and after much searching, come up scratching my head.

First off, I notice that half mid range pens have gotten cheaper, with less coating options (24K gold and maybe chrome if you're lucky only), the other half have gotten more expensive, and are all either titanium gold or rhodium. Also, the occurrence of 'bling' seems to have drastically increased, and this is another thing that 'manly man' is not looking for.

So who is the target audience these days? Is it either Liberace, or Highschool students? Have I been gone that long, or do I have tunnel vision and everyone else is shopping OS these days? What I was hoping to find was a mid-range ($15 - $20) kit, with clean but masculine lines, in Black Titanium. Closest I found is a Cigar, and my next best option I ordered is some Rhodium Jr Gent 2's, or a Bl Ti Sedona as a fallback, even though it had a slightly more feminine outline.

I tend to agree with your observations.

Does Addictive still sell the platinum hybrid cigar? They don't look like much in the photos but it's a beautiful kit, quite chunky and very suitable for a bloke. They were about $13 last time I looked.

    Cheers,

Yeah thanks, I might have to stock up while they're still available. he also has the Sterling Silver Sedona's, which are a very nice pen too.
