The pens look like they turned out pretty good for firsts... there is a good woodworking guild in Canberra. Should be able to get plenty of advice from the guys there or I will be home next weekend if you want to come for a drive out to Bungendore sometime. No idea if I have plans yet though
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.

LOL I can't remember what the timber is but I better find out because I have about ten more blanks the same, Red something. The finish I just used some old bees wax type stuff I used to use on my leather jacket.

Nah was definitely Red something Red Gum maybe?

Bought it at the wood show, there was a guy with wood on the back of a truck and he had these in stacks of about 10 or so for $15.

JT. Go to Woodcraft.com. Way down in left column you will see -project videos--. Loads of info. Also how to use different lathe tools How to's on bowl gouges, skew. etc. Also you can go to -You Tube.com- and search videos on just about anything on wood turning. Main thing is know your tool & how to use them & keep them sharp. There is also a rule of thumb on which is the correct speed for turning. NEVER use a Roughing Gouge to turn a bowl. Take your time, don't be in a rush to get things finished. I use a 3/4 spindle gouge used like a skew for all pens, but it's just what I've gotten used to. Enjoy all the videos. Myself, I've never met another woodturner & those videos were a great help.

Default Learning the lathe in Canberra

    Jack Tar,

As Corbs indicated, the ACT Woodcraft Guild ( www.woodcraftguild.org.au/ ) is a good place to start. They have a number of special interest groups around lathe work who meet at various times during the month.

If you want to get into bowl turning, Richard Raffan (internationally renowned wood turner and author of about nine books and DVDs) is a member and always ready to offer advice. He also runs two day courses through the guild at a fraction of the normal price.

    Cheers,
    Alan
