Default Help, Advice and a Volunteer..

I need some help from the group, and someone to test a piece of equipment for me to see if it works for someone other than myself.

I'm having a jig made to square pen blanks. I got a mockup this morning and so far, so good. Now I need some measurements.

If anyone uses a disc sander on blanks, could you tell me the size of the miter slot on your disc sander? And also, how far away from the disc is the miter slot? There's several types of equipment out there, and not all of the measurements are standard. I'd like to make sure this is adaptable.

Most important, I need inner diameter measurements of the brass tubes for the types of pens you make.. Not the outer measurements, not the drill size, but the internal diameter of the brass tubes. I'd like to make this a complete kit so that every type (or most every type) of pen kit can be used. I'll be using a different tube holder for each kit so I need to make sure I get accurate measurements. I can't use the measurements of the press-fit parts but also can't use the OD of the tubes. They would be too large.

Anyone want to test this once I get a working model back from the shop? All you'll need is a disc sander and the ability to make the table square to the disc..

The distance from the mitre slot on my sander is 3 1/2 inches, the miter slot is 20 mm,sorry to mix metric and imperial.

I will assist you in any way I can. Will pm with my particulars.

N L sounds like the V block I use to clean the ends of my tubes. I made a fence that fits in the miter slot of my Delta disc sander (.750 wide slot 5 ¼ inches away from the sanding disc). I then took one of my tool makers v blocks and mounted a drill bit in it that is the same size as the inside of the brass tube and hold it against the side wall and slide the blank up to the disc and sand it to the brass. This works very good and I can control it to take off what ever I want. I would like to see what you have.

Toomm .. that seems to be the same idea .. hold the tube squared to the disc and whatever wood happens to be attached to the tube would get sanded.

works well? one of my worries is that the friction of the disc might pull on the wood and bring it out of square, but it doesn't look like yours would have that problem.

    Thanks for the dimensions, too!
