Help With Bamboo
I had part of a bamboo floor plank in the garage for a little while and thought that I try and make a pen out of it. Now I am aware that this can be very hard if it is made a certain way(woven).
I cleaned the finish and made it flat before cutting into strips. I wanted it to be a little thicker as I sometime tend to drift a little when drilling holes for the pens as I like to expose a little bit of the end grain. I waited 24 hours after gluing the tube and put them on the lathe to turn.
I found that I was not getting a nice shaving or even getting a cut. I found it very difficult to make inroads in making this round. I used spindle roughing gouge, bowl gouge, detail gouge, scrapers and skew chisels. I had sharpen and resharpen with little or no effect.
Those of you that have tried to make pens from bamboo what has been your experience?

Not made a pen Christos but have drop spindles I found using high speed from start to finish and skew only the way to go scrapping instead of cutting on the face always light cuts once down to close to size. hope this helps.

I made a pen from the mongrel stuff, some time ago. Round nose scraper, with constant sharpening, and got down to size by removing copious amounts of dust.

No real problems that I am aware of, but like palms etc, sharp chisels and cutting is better (ie not scraping).

I see that I am not totally alone on bamboo and the consistent theme is very hard. I might get a chance to chuck it back on the lathe and try again today.

For those of you that are following this thread I did manage to get this back on the lathe and finish shaping with the chisel. It was very slow going and once I got to sanding it I was a lot happier. I used wipe on poly as a finish two coats on Saturday and one on Sunday afternoon evening.
I wanted it to fully cure before I put it together so next weekend will be the next time that I am in the garage.

Natural bamboo cuts pretty well from my experience with it & palms. I think the main problem is the hardness of the resins used to glue up the bamboo strips into flooring, cutting boards etc.
