Default Help with blow put please

Hi everyone. Had some time on the lathe today. It made another mistake and had a blow out with this piece of Lucerne timber (???). Maybe I have the name wrong because I can't find anything online for that wood. The light yellow end part of this blank was very waxy, and came off in ribbons similar to acrylic.

I can imagine how you might fix a blow-out in the middle of a blank, but how do you fix it at the end of a blank like this? Any step by steps available that you know about? I can sand to get some sawdust to mix with thick CA. But do you do it all in one go, or layers, and also how would you plug the end of the casting area at the end of the blank?

CA and sawdust will do the job. You will have to sand in between and check until you get it right. I normally put the blank back on the lathe and do it on there.

looks to me as that blank is cross cut and yes you could fix it with araldite wth some sawdust and use a toothpick to put on the tube and when done turn and finish as normal BUT HIDE THE STUFF UP UNDER THE CLIP
then nobosy will ever know except yourself and about 50 forum members

I was planning on hiding it under the clip but looking at the blow-out fixes that some people have done recently it might end up a feature. Hey there is always optimism!

But how do I make sure that the araldite/CA doesn't flow over the side? I am guessing don't do it on the bushings, since it would end up sticking to the bushing?

As above or you can get some resin and fine coffee and fix it that way.

I've had it a fair few times but on the 7mm tube blanks with pretty boring timber, so I have never been bothered to fix the hole. Would you recommend using masking/gaffer tape across the end of the blank so that the solution doesn't flow over into the tube?

take it off the mandrell and do it by holding it in your hand then set it down on flat surface to harden the replace on mandrel and turn round again

Prevention to some extent could be gained once you have squared the blank on the ends.
Plug the end of the tube with a rubber plug or plasticine, and then flood the end of the blank around the tube at each end with thin CA. It will bond the timber together better and also glue the blank to the tube better.

    Cheers

It could be Tree Lucerne that you have got a piece of.

    Use some of the sawdust from the blank;
Use some thin CA to start,
    Use Delrin bushings.
Intially you will need to build up the CA and sawdust. You can improvise with some glitter if you so desire! or with some different type of of fill. The build up of material will look like a terrible blob, but by gentle cutting back with the tools used, you will get it back to the size you desire, using the Delrin bushings makes it easier to get the blank off the bushing, being on the end you will need to sand back the excess on the end of the blank to make it square.

With difficult materials or suspected ones (comes with experience) it pays to soak the ends with thin CA to help strengthen that area first, it is also good practice to cut from the bushes towards the centres so the cut is supported by the thicker material .softer materials and very porous ones are best soaked with thin CA as you get a few mm from size materials such as worthless woods pine cones some burls and mixes also can benefit from a dose of thin CA as you go ,all part of the process from simple plain timbers to ever more complex creations hehe. Sometimes the flaws as such end up as desirable features to keep life interesting and add that little extra to a pen creation cheers ~ John

AusMadDog has hit the nail on the head.

    Prevention is better than cure.

After truing the ends up flood the ends with thin CA. HazzaB told me this last year & I haven't lost a blank since. Thanks Hazza
