    Default Help with 'Click' Pens

G'Day....I want to improve my pen turning skills particularly with the click style known by some pen suppliers as P9...I have made six but none work when I put them together...I would like someone to have a look at them and let me know a] what i have done wrong and b] how I can fix them. I will pay the postage both to and from the person willing to assist me..

Just out of curiosity, did you get the click pen kits from Carbatec Perth ??. And if so I'll take a guess at the problem, when turned down to the Pen9 bushing and the pen is assembled the tip fits in the hole but there is about 1mm all round the outside of the tip, IE the blank wasn't turned small enough, and even with that if you put the kit together it doesn't click very well and even with the pen clicked closed the tip of the ink still sticks slightly past the end of the tip..

Is this the problem your having ??

the reason i knew the problem is I got the same kits a week or so ago, a couple of the problems are fixable.

Ink sticking out - when you glue to blank to the tubes and square off the ends with the trimmer, dont trim all the way down to the brass, if you leave a mm or so on the end of each tube when the pen is turned it'll now be slighly longer by a couple of mm and the ink will now sit inside the tip not slightly out.

Tip end - slightly more difficult, I'll presume you have the standard spacer bushing (also called 1a). the bore hole for the click pen tubes is 8mm and your mandrel is 7mm. use the pen9 bushings for the centre and the tail end, for the tip end get a spare 7mm pen tube (standard slimline tube) and cut about 5mm off the end, then insert the big piece inside your blank. when you mount it on your mandrel use one of the standard bushings then your first blank with the other tube inside then the pen9 centre bush then rear blank and pen9 end bushing, then just turn down to the bushings like normal.

The click not working too well - there isn't much that can be done with that, they are a very cheap low quality kit, what i did find that makes a difference, if you've made a couple of pens your not happy with and dont want. You can take the botton spring out of a spare (the longer one) and insert that spring ASWELL as the one for the kit into the bottom ie. put two springs in the bottom end.

I went and spoke to the guys and they wern't aware of the problems with the kits, but they are now, apparently the reason for it was some time ago there was some supply problems with the Pen 9 kits and they became unavailable but due to demand for the product another simular one was sourced, the ones we got, unfortunately they are a lower quality and the bush needed for the tip end is smaller (which they also weren't aware of). their suggestion was to get the actual Pen 9 kit (which they now have a limited supply of) not the Click pen kit. or my suggestion is try onewhere else like http://www.addictivepenkits.com.au there stuff seems to be a better quality.

I just had the same problem last week so I hope this helps

If you want a good quality click pen go for the click Sierra, Brett @ Addictive has them and they are easy to turn and have a nice mechanism.
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.
