Default Need help creeating a streamline pencil

    Hi Everyone,

I would like to make a streamline mechanical pencil. I have one of the Timberbits slimline mechanical pencil kits plus a streamine centre band. Unfortunately it's not that simple... the slimline centre band for the pencils actually hold the two halves together.

Any suggestions? I could simply use a whole bunch of epoxy or CA and slip on the streamline centreband, but I don't think that this is anything close to an ideal solution.

I have tried boring out a streamline centre band so that it goes over the top of the supplied slimline centreband, but this didn't work well.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The reason I want to do a streamline is because it is for a client order of matching set (streamline pen and pencil)

    Thanks, Simon.

Not easy I'm afraid. I'd turn down the slimline centreband to suit the inside dia of the streamline, then glue together

yea i agree with Dai Sensei, I would turn down the band part of the slimline pencil so that it is a straight cylinder that fits into each tube and then drill out the streamline band to fit over the turned down pencil band and glue in place.
that way it will hold the two tubes together and have the ribbed look of the streamline but you will be able to pull the tubes apart again if needed.

Thanks guys. First attempt at your method seems to work. I turned it down just a little top far (in order for the streamline to fit over the top) but then it is a loose fit in the pen. I think a mix of turning down the slimline centre to flat (but not touch the edges) and then boring out the streamline to fit over the ends will do the trick.

Wood Turningz sell a comfort pencil centre band that may give you what you want.

It is at the bottom of this page Slimline Pen Kits - WoodTurningz. The $25 US flat rate shipping may put the mockers on it.

Thanks dorno that'd be great. I don't need it to be streamline in particular if there is another style the same outside diameter.

043Turning also have Comfort pencil kits, copper and gold.
I also have some Comfort pencil couplers from WoodTurningz, I could part with one. They only come in gold though.

BTW Comfort and Streamline CB have the same center diameter. The Comfort CB is the same width as the Slimlime CB.

    Hey everyone.
Thanks for the tips. I have finished my first attempt. See close-up pic below of attempt #1. I used a skew and turned down the centre and one side of the slimline centre coupler, so that the streamline centre band would simply slide over it. A whole bunch of Araldyte epoxy later, and I have a successful streamline mechanical pencil. But since it has been turned down on one end, it is only held in by CA - there is no actual friction between the centre band and the pen tube. So this one is great as a test which I'll keep for myself, but I don't trust the glue joint well enough to give it away.

So tonight I made round 2 (seen in the photo with the first finished pencil). I turned down the centre of the slimline centreband only, and then just slightly bored out the streamline centreband so that it fits over the ends. Now when I turn a new pen on the lathe, it will make just as strong a hold as the normal slimline pencil kit. Plus a bit of Araldyte will be used to keep the streamline centre band in place.

    Thanks for the tips everyone.

    Simon.
