    Default Help Please

    Hey There,

I think that I have a problem, I made SWMBO a simple Acrylic Click action pen last night (she and MIL are going to SIL's down south for the weekend and she wanted to show off her Clever other Half's talents) I already had the blank drilled and glued and by the time she had the Lasagne and salad prepared I had the pen sitting on the Table. Here lies the problem, she wants to learn how to make pens, do I set up my other lathe and get her into it or do I leave the Shed as MY shed?? or do I trade her shed time for time in her Craft Room ( No Go zone for MEN) I have no interest in quilting or scrap booking, Pleeease some one I need some answers before she gets home on Sunday night.

Sounds like a good way to boost the tool acquisition fund. "Honey, we can both use this in the shop."

    LOL
OK, here's what you do. Invite her in with open arms. Tell her that to get started properly you need to get some 'decent' tools as she couldn't possibly learn to do it properly with your old stuff. Then of course you need to buy bucket lods of kits and blanks and other stuff.

When she gets bored, and fed up having to clean the shop after each pen, you have scored all the goodies

And don't forget to tell her she can ONLY do CA finishes - she'll be out of there in no time

hehe! start her off as an apprentice ,drilling gluing etc etc ! she will soon tire of that ! Tell her it will be nice to have someone brewing the coffee or knocking the tops off the coldies, and dusting and sweeping is also in the apprentice ship rules hehe, if all that fails start her on truestone as long as she sharpens her own tools . You should soon have an empty workshop once more Just be careful you don't end up sleeping in the shed lol! cheers ~ John

Default A vote to let her play!

My girlfriend moved in last year and in the summer when we paid a visit to my 87 year old father. He gave he a little turning lesson and she loved it, when we got home I prepared a bunch of squares for her to practice tool technique. She bought a few slime line kits, bushings and a mandrel in November, and now she is in the 5 dozen range. Has orders for 9 pens at the moment and is making stock to sell at a craft show in the late fall. Most nights I come home after working the afternoon shift to find one or two new ones sitting on the dinning room table. Once she had the basics she was off and running on her own.

She buys and pays for her own tools and kits and is using up my hoarded scrap stash that I had no use for but couldn't bring myself to toss. For me it has been a win win situation. Well okay, I can't get on the lathe but I have lots of other things to keep me busy and when I do she will have made enough to buy one for herself.

P.S. She has mastered the CA and BLO & CA finishes quite nicely too.

    See.
