Default Very Old Huon Pine Burl

Bark inclusions, darker in colour, left it fatter to retain the colour at that stage.

Starting to look quite figured with the bark inclusions and it is a darker yellow than normal, great, Amos

Now that's a piece of Huon with real character. Lovely!

    G'day Peter,
The pen is quite striking to me. I really like the color in it. I have a question. Once the pen was turned, did it maintain the wonderful aroma?

    Cheers,

    Rick

Rick yes it does return after the finish masking occurs and maintains that sweet smell. In Tasmania I saw a kitchen entirely made of burl Huon what a sight, what a pleasant sensory experience. The smell is part of the reason it survives so well for so long,it also acts the oil that is as a dare I say it a sex pheremone for some insects and was used as an attractant by scientists when I worked with CSIRO Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by our now President of The ACT Woodcraft Guild.

Tidying up I found my encapsulated dung beetle, given me by the photofinishing industry guys who made them into tie pins. The subliminal joke was for photographers benefit dont push that crap onto me when film was left for processing and printing. That same President was a foremost authority in Dung Beetle knowledge in the world.

    Have a nice day. Peter

Peter the colour is what you look for in Huon of that age, it glow has such a warm glow to it. How does it compare in cutting and finishing to a plain piece of Huon of similar age. First time I have liked the wasp waist but for the reason you have done it, to retain the characteristics of the burl. Will have to talk to a friend that has a business in Tassie, see if I can sweet talk her
