Thread: My first Imperial kit

My first Imperial kit
In black ash burl. This is a very high quality kit and it shows. Nice heft, nice balance, and the usual quality platings that one associates with these kits. The black ash burl is something fairly new to me. This is just the second one. I was getting tired of amboyna and buckeye burl all the time as I expect you all were as well. Twenty coats of thin CA, micromeshed to 12,000 and finished off with Griot's glass polish. While this kit is nice, at $60 U.S. it is not something I will be making a habit of.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Man that's one [another] beautiful pen & finish. Notice the nib is like the Lotus pen also. Does it feel right holding it?
20 coats. So how much do you have to undercut the blank for that many coats?
One more question. Can you tell much difference in the shine after using a glass polish? Above the 12,000mm & a light buff on a wheel?
Keep them comming--we're enjoying them.

Beautiful work as usual Al. The new kit may be expensive but has turned out AAAAA and the black ash has come up a treat.

Thanks guys. Not sure if the glass polish makes much of a difference, but it's part of my process now and I just keep doing it. I stop the lathe and polish lengthwise for every grit of Micromesh as well. By the time I get to 12,000 it's pretty shiny. The coats are very thin (thin CA) and, by the time I am done sanding it, I've probably worn half of them away so I don't adjust for the CA. The nib is like the Lotus pen. I believe both kits are very similar although I've never actually turned a Lotus before. It is very comfortable in my hand.
When is the next pen swap drawing? This could be a good pen for that. When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
