    Default Inserting Brass Tubes

    Hi All

From time to time, usually with the heavier timbers (Burls/Red Gum etc) I have real problems inserting the brass tubes into the drilled holes, this is despite the correct size tube and drills being used. Today I have just ruined a nice piece of burl and a brass tube in the process.

    Any clues

Dave from Timberbits has a video on this very subject. I remember watching it, thinking what a good idea, and now I have forgotten what he actually said in it so I can't help you out other than jumping on his website/youtube and looking for it.

    Default Insertion !

When you drill timber you can release stress/ tension in the timber causing movement, also if the wood isn't fully dry the heating from the drilling can dry the timber out suddenly causing movement.

My solution is to drill one day, leave 24 hours and run the drill down them again just to relieve any tight spots that may have formed and then glue the tubes in. If the timber is still damp leave then for a few weeks before re-drilling.

    hope this helps,

    Cam

I sometimes find this happens with a drill size that is very close to tube size, I always get the drill size as close as possible to size not always what the details may be calling for, in some instances (especially harder type woods) the wood expands under the heat from drilling and the tube won't fit when it cools, I simply use a rat tail rasp to ease out the hole till the tube slides in freely ,impatience at getting to the fun part so no waiting time hehe, cheers ~ John

I don't try to glue a tube in any blank unless I have dry fit it to make sure it drops though easily without being pushed. I also make sure the tube hasn't been deformed, sometimes they get squished a little.

I have had this a few times, but only with ca never with polyurethane, so I tend to use poly when I think it may be a problem.
Don't know if maybe I was just lucky with the poly but the ca definitely goes off too quickly and binds.
Pretty annoying when it wrecks a good blank though.
    Cheers

Pete never use thin CA for glueups, if you must, use medium or thick CA this has a bit more working time more like about 15 seconds for medium I rarely use CA for glueups as it has a tendency to let go of the tubes as your are sanding or even polishing as the heat sometimes softens it .
