    Default INSTALLED VL150.

I have a VL100 that is quite old now and shouted me a New VL150 from Timberbits.DSCF0001.jpg This VFD I had on my shelf for a few years I found out that after a yr or more not to switch it on without reforming the Capacitors in the unit or else it could blow up messy inside and change of underware, The reform cost plus even then maybe new capacitiors (high labour cost) about break even so a new VFD latest model was fitted to a new LeRoy Somers 1100 watt three phase motor connected in Delta formation best advised. This a bare lathe fitted on my existing sit down work bench, raised the motor to allow the drive belt out the head stock keeping leg room under the bench.DSCF0004.jpgDSCF0005.jpg This barrel shape fan is from air con tubed down to the lathe to remove superfine dust it looked to me to be better lowered where it is wanted to assist removal of CA fumes also.

DSCF0007.jpg Note the increased size made by me of the tool rest for pens extra depth needed the increased bulk of the VL150 normal heavy duty dust extraction behind and under the tool rest the shaft size is 1 inch.DSCF0009.jpg the new VFD has the speed control Potentiometer fitted into the VFD also a small fan built in. The motor a LeRoy Somers 1100 watt three phase motor connected in Delta.
DSCF0012.JPG The covering over the drive belt painted blue. I use a draughtsman adjustable seat.

    Kind regards Peter.

Looks like a great set up Peter, a lot of thought has gone into your design.

Do you find you ever have to change belt speeds ?
I think with this type of set up, one speed with 1:1 ratio or a slight overdrive ( if your motor is 2-pole 2800rpm ) or 1:2 for a 4-pole motor should suffice for pen turning.

Out of curiosity what was the VFD unit & motor worth?

I am considering repowering older VL100 lathes plus Flindersia was looking for a VFD for a VL150 a little while back.

With the VL100 I set it up on the fastest drive never needed to change the belt/pulley settings purely used for pen turning the main reason I fit vfd is the soft start and if my tong tester reads truly power consumption is minimal. Feel I could get by mostly with flat out speed except for finishing this unit has an ancient 3/4 hp three phase motor could be 50 yrs old.

The vL150 is a virgin no pens made on it yet waiting on more than minus temps to subside and still modifying accessories etc you can buy vfd,s from an E Bay seller in Adelaide freight free to your house for 140.00 dollars a mate of mine into C and C and extensive gear uses these on mill, drills bandsaw for steel etc swears by them.

In answer to Mobyturns since you appear to be minded to compare and save look around, I simply bought a LeRoy Somers motor from the same firm that sold me the illustrated VFD I did not use yrs ago, the new one fitted the companies are under the same overarching company it is the first new motor I have ever bought as an ex sparky I accumulated heaps literally of motors check their prices on Google I went for absolute overkill in my 1100 watt motor. I had a motor same size and brand being as I became a sparky in the 1950,s when I connected it up as Delta and thought quickly and in error thought I would check the damn thing with 415 (never ever do this by the way) expensive smell. Too long out of the game.It runs as a 240 volt motor in a round about way.

    Have fun I am.

    Kind regards Peter.
