Default Jack Daniels workshop pencil (plus bonus)

Here's a workshop / artist's mechanical pencil I made today from a Jack Daniels barrel blank. It smelled great when turning. I saved the shavings for the new owner of the pen. The pen is a few millimetres short because I turned down the tenon on the wrong part of the blank, even after checking twice!!

Finished with 21 coats of thin CA, and finished with micro-mesh through to 12,000 grit.

As a bonus, here's a Pâté knife from Zebrawood. Not a pen, but thought you might be interested. I have never done anything like this before. I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Finished with EEE then Shellawax Glow.

    That's a nice pencil Simon.

I have a Jack Daniels blank that is going to be become a fountain pen. I never thought about saving the shavings, but it might add some interest when it comes time to sell.

Since you lose the scent once the pen is finished, keeping the shavings gives the new owner something extra and it really does smell like Jack Daniels.

The one thing I would change next time starting one from scratch is I'd move the hole and mount the tube closer to the edge of the blank. It has the scorched inside of the barrel, and it looks great while turning. If mounting the barrel off-centre closer to the edge it would give an interesting feature.
