Japanese persimmon
Not so much a pen topic as a timber one, but since you pen turners seem to like unusual highly figured woods more than a lot of the furniture and box makers on here, i thought i should share a little gem i've come across for anyone who's willing to do some translating whilst shopping online....
Allow me to introduce peacock grained black persimmon. The colours in the pictures are accurate and extremely stable going by the fact that a few months ago i was regluing a 130 year old box made out of it that was still as vivid as the first picture.
As far as i've been able to find, its only available from Japan and large boards are neither common nor cheap...smaller pieces on the other hand are reasonably affordable all things considered at $2-$40 depending on size and figuring. Cheaper pieces have less green in them, and the cheapest grades (which are still not super cheap) are extremely similar to black and white ebony

As far as i can tell its only available online, i seem to recall finding a source for it a while back by using google translate to get the japanese characters for it and then doing another search using those instead of english.
i got two fairly large boards with almost no figuring on them-just half sapwood and half black heartwood from a friend who pulled them out of a japanese chest from the 40's. So you might also be able to get it by looking at the antiques market, taisho and showa era furniture is usually quite cheap.
