    Default Jet Penturning lathe

This lathe I bought some time ago to run in harmony with my Taig Lathe. The reasoning being they have in common the screw drive shaft of 3/4 inch and I have chucks etc, thinking what a versatile unit I can cart around to demos. The first time I used it with a three jaw 3 inch chuck on stopping normally the three thousand running revs on turnoff spun the chuck in my direction with a turned metal missile in its jaws.If you look closely the bent tool rest deflected the chuck first down then dinged the bed then searched for me,just missed.Brief change of underware sound familiar{just joking]
The open left hand view shows the reason for the braking effect so helpfull turning pens because there is an idler pulley that creates the slowing faster.
Next observe the first best mod chuck the useless slide under the tool rest and that stupid locking bar, replace with a piece of aluminium tapped to take an allen headed lock screw. Then keep the handy bar on the tail stock but replace the silly block under with aluminium as shown in pic.
I mounted the unit on a slab of Corian and fitted it to a piece of 30mm laminated chipboard. A great pen turning lathe for all that just watch the flying chuck and remember my experience. PeterAttachment 32799

The idler pulley is for adjusting the belt tension. It sounds as if the belt tension is way too great if it is causing the lathe to stop very quickly.

    Default Idler Pulley

Adjustment is fine, toothed belt pulley friction, type of motor stops quickly try it with a chuck. Nice theory but. Peter

    Most powertools have sharp teeth.
    People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
