First JR Gent
Hi,
Have started using the JR Gent courtesy of Timberbits. This is the second attempt. The first one had a catastrophic failure of glue holding timber and brass tube. That pen was wrapped in Beefwood.
Second attempt made with Waddy - also known as black wattle - Acacia peuce — Waddy, Waddi, Waddy-wood, Birdsville Wattle
Sanded to 600 and the Micromesh to 12000. Finished with EEE and Shellawax.
I really like the look of the dark blemish on the cap. It started as a crack in the timber that was not visible when I started. Thought it was going to go the same way as the beefwood.
Thanks for looking.

Going well there Todd.
After you have finished sanding on the lathe and have stopped it. Sand along the length of the blank with a fine sand paper - 800 grit and then steel wool. It will remove the scratches that come from sanding.
I know a lot of the people on here use CA to glue the tube to the blank. I have trouble with it coming unstuck at times too. Either sand the tube with a rough grit sandpaper before you apply the CA or try Sika Poly glue which takes overnight to dry buy grips like a crocodile's jaws and still remains elastic to allow for rough work.
Keep up the good work.

Yes glueups are very important to the finished product , I only use CA on acrylics ,the rest get epoxy I found that the heat from sanding was affecting the CA bond .Sometimes the recommended drills for a kit are a bit big as well ,which means the blank can be off to one side on the tube and you get a thick and thin side .
I hope that the thin line you can see in the photos is the grain and not a crack, that would be a shame if so , Natural finishes have their place in the overall scheme of things , just do what feels right for you, looks like a worthy pen for anyone Cheers ~ JohnG'day all !Enjoy your stay !!!
