Kit problems
Have any of you guys or girls had pen kits where the dimensions of the parts which press together have not been machined to the correct tolerances.
If you have, what did you do to overcome the problem.
Do you check all sizes before starting to make the pen, or only find out when you go to put it together?

I have not had a problem. Sometime the OD size may vary so I always measure that but never had a problem with the fit.
What kit are you having trouble with?
What part of the kit? Also photos always help.Cheers Rum Pig

It was either a slimeline or Streamline kit. It was a little while ago when I had the problem so can't remember which. It was the nib and the clip cap which were tight. I only started checking the rest of the kits after I cracked a wood, and an acrylic blank. I had been told at the time that maybe I had some glue still inside or a burr, but this was not the case as I had been very particular in checking as I was only new to pen making at the time. I then checked the diameters of the kits and found the nibs were approximately 0.004" oversize compared to one that fitted correctly. Maybe I was just unlucky and got a batch that did not get picked up in quality control, and this is just a very rare instance.
Due to the value of these low end kits it was not worth doing anything about at the time. I was able to make up some little jigs and take the diameters down to the correct size and use them ok.

Yes, a common problem unfortunately; you may need to run a long round file through the tube to give a little lattitude, also put some blo or danish oil on both the inside of the tube and on the kit portion before pressing together. Sometimes I use a dremmel to slightly enlarge the hole in the clip so that the plug portion will fit into it. If a fitting becomes too loose because you have reamed or sanded it, you can always put a tiny bit of Thick CA smeared on it and quickly press fit. Amos

i am having the same problem with some streamline kits that i bought a fair number of
it is definitely the kits ( not glue in the tubes ) because even the end cap on some of them does not want to fit through the ring on the clip , so i have been doing a lot of filing with a chain saw file .
i think the cause is probably the plating .
( and cracked a few blanks , which posses me off specially when i have had some of them pre engraved )'If the enemy is in range, so are you.'
