Kyhal makes his first pen
I have my niece and her three children staying with us for a while, they live in Bourke NSW.
Today under my guidance Kyhal aged 12 made his first pen.
The blank was a pre drilled sandal wood from Jim, he used only the 1/2" roughing gouge and then sanded to 1200 wet and dry. The finish is three coats of Sheelawax and the kit is black enamel from a group buy years ago that DJ ran.
Below are some of the pictures to document his journey.

I bet he's happy with that. You better watch out, he'll be taking over your business soon

That's great! Getting children interested in woodworking at a young age could be something he will remember the rest of his life. Something he can hand down to his kids.

Well done
It is good to see kids getting into woodwork. My 13year old girl made her first one about two weeks ago and my 8 year old son did one today and it will be put together on Sunday some time.

Kyhal well done for your first pen you have a good teacher in your grand father. Sam you will have to make room for a second lathe. Reminds me of my daughter's first go on the lathe was when i was demonstrating at last years expo. I know Sam, you are as proud of Kyhal as I was of my Dani-elle.
Great to see kids getting into turning.
